Engagement Etiquette and Checklist

He Gave You A Ring ... Making an Engagement Announcement
You've just gotten engaged! You'll want to shout your wedding engagement from the rooftops. Here is the best engagement etiquette for spreading the wonderful news - making your engagement announcement. The first people you should tell about your engagment are your parents and/or any children from a previous union. Traditionally the rule of engagement dictates that the groom's parents call the bride's parents to introduce themselves and invite them to meet. The second group of people to tell about your wedding engagement are all other relatives and your friends. They can be told in person or by phone, either is acceptable. An engagement party is traditionally held by the bride's parents but in recent years it has become acceptable for anyone to host the engagement party.

Engagement Party Checklist
Eight to Ten Weeks Before Party
Agree on the Host: Traditionally the bride's parents host the engagement party, but today often the groom's parents co-host the affair or hold one of their own. The engagement party is a great way for the families to get to know each other!
Pick a Date: Generally the engagement party / parties are held 3-4 months after the engagement.
Make out your Guest List: Make sure you plan to invite these guests to the wedding ceremony and reception as well. Wedding attendants should be invited as well, if you have selected them.

Four to Six Weeks Before Party
1. Send Invitations: This is a time for the two familites to get to know one another in a fun, festive atmosphere. The "theme" for the party can be consistent with the upcoming wedding or something that both families enjoy; like a barbeque or cocktails and appetizors at the host's home.
2. Plan the Menu: Keep the menu consistent with your theme but also be mindful of food allergies, special dietary needs, etc.
3. Decide on Decorations and Centerpieces: Have fun but don't go overboard! There is a LOT more to come.

The Week of the Party
1. Go Shopping: Prepare a detailed list of all items you will need for the party. Include food, drinks, party goods and decorations. Start early to make sure you have plenty of time to prepare!
3. Recruit Help: Make sure you have enough help lined up to prepare for the party as well as make sure guests needs are taken care of during the party. And don't forget the clean-up crew!!
3. Prepare the Party Site: Make sure there is plenty of room for guests to sit and eat. If someone is hosting the party at their home, offer to have the lawn cut and house cleaned for them. Plan ahead for time to decorate the venue.

The Engagement Party!!
1. Go ahead and enjoy the start of your new life together! Greet guests and make sure everyone gets introduced to each other. Say a few special introductory words and then sit back, relax and enjoy!!
