Cake Ceremony and Checklist

Cake Cutting Etiquette
The wedding cake cutting ceremony is treasured and greatly anticipated by the wedding guests. But there is a protocol cutting wedding cake. Here is a brief cutting guide for wedding cake.

The bride and groom make the first slice using a special (often engraved) wedding cake knife designated for this special cake cutting event. The groom places his hand over the bride's on the knife handle and together they make the first cut. This is done to symbolize the new life they will share together. After the first cut is made, the wedding cake cutting and serving duty is then handed over to someone else (usually a staff member). After the first two pieces are cut, the bride and groom stand together and feed each other a piece of their cake! Throughout the years this has become a most memorable tradition as it often not known until that moment if the couple will be eating or wearing their cake.

Wedding Cake Checklist
Three to Six Months Before the Wedding
1. Select Baker: Today there are many cake choices - whether a traditional wedding cake or a cake alternative. Look for a baker willing to match your theme and creativity.
2. Choose shape, size, flavor, filling and decorations: Your baker will be the best one to give advice! Ask to see pictures of his creations. Have fun tasting samples, if available.
3. Order Grooms Cake: While you are at the bakery, select your groom's cake as well

Two to Three Months Before the Wedding
1. Purchase Cake Knife and Server Set: Why not select a personalized set that will remind you of your special day for years to come? Our sister company has a large variety of cake server sets that will be perfect for your cake ceremony.
2. Purchase Cake Topper: Select a cake topper that is consistent with your theme and accents your cake decorations. Traditional or modern, the choice is yours! Why not use some fresh flowers or perhaps you'd like to use a topper that was your parents or grandparents. Don't forget to deliver your cake topper to the bakery in advance.
3. Decide who will Cut the Cake: Make sure you check with your wedding reception venue to determine who will cut and serve the cake. A small, but important detail!

Wedding Day
1. Cake Table: At the reception, spotlight the wedding cake on a separate table with a white table cloth. Decorate the table with flowers and greens.
2. Cake Top and Accessories: Make sure someone has been designated to take the top of the cake, cake topper and server set home after the reception and preserve it for you.
3. Recruit Help: Make sure you have someone lined up to return cake stands and pillars to the bakery.
4. Cut the Cake and Enjoy: Plan ahead for an agreed to time to cut the cake and serve to guests. SMILE! Enjoy the cake ceremony.
